Knowing Repetitive Strain Injury
Commonly referred to as RSI, repetitive strain injury occurs when a muscle is strained because of repeated motion in the same place and the same way, over and over again. Simply put, it is caused by overuse of a muscle. RSI can be a disadvantage especially to those who are active in sports or outdoor activity as the more pain you feel, the less you would want to indulge in your favorite activity and over time, if this is not treated, can be a pain.
When a person experiences RSI, a loss of range of motion is experienced in the affected area. This is one of the symptoms related to RSI. Apart from that, burning sensations, tingling or numbness also occurs.
Occupations that commonly result in RSI are those that require a repetitive nature of work everyday such as assembly line, computer work and even physical activity. Repetitive strain injury can hold you back and restrain you from enjoying life and the things that you are passionate about, especially if you are an adventurous and physical person. But then again, this injury can put a damper on anyone regardless of hobby or passion.
If you discover that you have RSI, it is best and important to keep it under control. The question is, how? When treating RSI, a combination of several different methods can be used to make things a whole lot better.
Rest it
Yes that is what you should do if you RSI get any worse. If you sense pain in the same area, give that muscle some rest by not doing an activity that needs that muscle to react. Medical practitioners would suggest at least 2 weeks minimum. During this time, do not overwork the muscle. Best is to keep as minimum movement as possible.
Medication
Sometimes, resting the area is not enough. Medication can help speed up the process too. Some of the medication that has been proven to work best on RSI is inflammatory and non-steroidal drugs such as ibuprofen and aspirin. These medications reduce the swelling as well as pain and stress on the affected area.
Surgery
Scary we know, but in some cases, surgery is very much needed and is considered a definite solution. A doctor will be able to assess if surgery is your best option. Surgery is normally given for more severe cases. Surgery for RSI is a one day procedure and only requires general anesthesia. Surgery can successfully and permanently correct RSI.
Physical Therapy
With a combination of surgery and physical therapy or healing with physical therapy, your RSI will be over and done with in no time. Or at least reduced or lessened. Physical therapy for RSI can do wonders as it can greatly promote healing of the muscle, speed up recovery and also help you to prevent it in the future without sacrificing the activities that you enjoy. Physical therapy is useful as it re-strengthens the muscle especially after surgery.
At the end of the day, RSI is something you do not have to live with as there are options for cure. Treating the problem first before it becomes severe is always the best way. It may knock you off your feet, you but can always get up!
